Savannah, GA – Humane Society: So many ways to help
Lynn Gensamer, Executive Director
Thanks to everyone who is helping to spread the word about “Pick of the Litter”, our thrift shop. Donating “gently-used” items and taking advantage of the shop’s fabulous deals are great ways to support the Humane Society. The shop is run by a dedicated team of volunteers and a small staff who are responsible for processing donations and making pick-ups. All proceeds from shop sales go toward animal care and shelter operations. Sales from the thrift shop account for about 20% of the HSGS operating budget. If you are a regular, we appreciate your business. If you haven’t yet visit the shop, we look forward to seeing you soon. (more…)
Savannah, GA – The Humane Society for Greater Savannah is pleased to announce that it has received a $23,278 grant from The Pedigree Foundation in support of the highly successful Operation New Hope program. Starting this month, Operation New Hope is expanding to include female inmates, and the number of dogs in each 4-week class will increase from six to 16.
Operation New Hope is a partnership between the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and the Humane Society for Greater Savannah. The goal of Operation New Hope is to give dogs with poor prospects for adoption a second chance, and to reduce recidivism rates by giving inmates the opportunity to acquire new transferable skills and experience accountability.
Ninety-percent of the 189 dogs that completed the Operation New Hope program have found new loving homes. And, the recidivism rate among ONH inmate participants is more than 75% lower than that of the general jail population.
The Pedigree Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to helping dogs in need find loving homes, expressed enthusiasm for Operation New Hope and awarded this grant to help the program grow and serve as a model for other shelters around the country.
Operation New Hope graduate dogs available for adoption can be viewed at www.humansocietvsav.org, and www.chathamsheriff.org. Operation New Hope is funded by the Humane Society and community donations.

Savannah, GA – Know the signs of dog-flipping
Lynn Gensamer, Executive Director
It will come as no surprise, given my position with the Humane Society, that people enjoy telling me stories about their pets. Recently, I met someone who had purchased an adorable puppy she found advertised on Craigslist. The seller had a sob story about how the costs of taking care of this puppy were far greater than she had expected so she was looking to find it a new home. She claimed to have gotten it from a breeder, whose name she provided as a reference. The new owner explained that she had called and felt reassured by the fact that the Pekapoo “breeder” recommended a premium dog food brand. Note: any legitimate breeder will accept a return; in fact, in most cases the breeder sales contract requires that a dog be returned. (more…)
