HOW TO ADOPT

Adoptions take place at our facility at 7215 Sallie Mood Drive, Savannah, GA 31406. Adoption applications are "first come, first served." We do not place pets on hold and we ask that you be prepared to take your pet home the same day.

Viewing hours are Tuesday-Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. During these hours please come by the shelter so you can interact with available pets and fill out an adoption application.

TOP 5 REASONS TO ADOPT

Thinking of adding a pet to your family? Here are five reasons to adopt your new best friend.

1. If you adopt, you'll save a life

Each year in the United States alone, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized because too few people adopt from shelters. Because space within shelters is limited, staff members too frequently are required to decide which animals will be euthanized. The number of euthanized animals could be reduced dramatically if more people adopted pets instead of buying them. By adopting from a humane society or private animal shelter, rescue group, or from a local animal-control agency, you will help save the lives of two animals – the pet you adopt, and a homeless animal somewhere who can be rescued because of the space you helped free up.

Adoption Policies

    • All adopted pets are surgically sterilized. Any animal that is too young or otherwise unable to be spayed or neutered before leaving the shelter, will go into foster care with the adopter until the surgery is performed. Once the pet is sterilized, the adoption can be finalized. Please keep in mind, children and four-legged friends should be included in the final decision to adopt and we do allow meet and greets for family pets.

    • Adoption applications are “first come, first served.” We cannot place pets on hold. We ask that you are prepared to take your pet home the same day as the adoption however in some cases they may need to stay until spay/neuter surgery is completed.

    • Be aware: There is no guarantee that you will be approved for the particular pet for which you have applied. We are looking for the best fit for the pet and potential adopter. You may be encouraged to meet a different pet that may be a better fit.

    • Our counselors and expert staff spend a lot of time helping you make a good decision about bringing home a new family member. We encourage you to be certain about your decision before finalizing your adoption. Adoption fees are non-refundable however an exchange may be honored within the first 30 days if a different pet is a better match.

    • All dogs adopted from HSGS can take advantage of our free training classes held every Saturday. Ask your adoption Counselor for more details.

  • The Humane Society reserves the right to deny any adoption application, for any reason. Decisions are based on the standards for humane care and responsible pet ownership as set by the Board of Directors.
